How to bargain at Peruvian markets? Expert Tips

When it comes to bargaining for a good deal, not all prices are negotiable. Your local supermarket probably won't give you a discount on milk or bread just because you ask. But when you're buying a car or even hiring home repair services, the virtue of negotiating can be built around haggling.

But which purchases are worth the effort of haggling on? Is there really a chance of getting a better deal? The answer is yes, and we're going to tell you where!

We surveyed more than 3,100 people from around the world (including North America, Europe, and Africa) to understand what it takes to be a good negotiator—from the role gender might play in your ability to get a better deal, to how much appearance and good looks might matter in your culture. Read on to see what we learned about when and where you should try to negotiate—whether you're taking a taxi in Mexico or buying jewelry in India—and how much you could save.

Haggling in Peru

In Peru, women admitted to getting discounts of around 20% off the original price, which is higher than men, who get approximately 11%.

More than 41% of Peruvians surveyed believe it makes no difference whether the haggler is male or female; only 15% believe this process is easier for men, and 43% believe it is easier for women. This figure is quite similar to other countries around the world, where women are also believed to be more successful at haggling.

33% of the Peruvian population believes that physical appearance influences the outcome of haggling, a percentage very similar to other countries around the world. In Latin America, this percentage is lower in Colombia, where only 15% of those surveyed responded that physical appearance is important when negotiating prices.

Peruvians generally have the best luck negotiating prices for taxi rides (66%) and home repairs (35%).

These are 5 tips for getting good prices.

Research the price:

Find out the product's real market value.

Once you have this information, you can ask the seller for a discount or a promotion.

Establish a strategy:

Define your limits and priorities.

Use the following questions: How much can I pay? How do you plan to reach an agreement with the seller? What benefits will both of you receive?

Show genuine interest:

Confirm to the seller that you are interested in the product and willing to buy it.

Express your enthusiasm and commitment; this way, they will be more inclined to offer a discount or special offer.

Be flexible:

Show adaptability in aspects other than price.

You can analyze the counteroffers offered to you, as being open to different alternatives will give you a more beneficial deal overall.

Don't be afraid to look for other options:

If the seller isn't willing to offer you a lower price, consider looking at other stores or suppliers.

Let them know that you can look for other alternatives if you can't reach an agreement, and that's where an offer can be considered.
