Peru is a country in which you can enjoy a large number of tourist attractions of all kinds. We can appreciate its history through its archaeological sites, fall head over heels with its prominent mountains or relax on its sunny beaches. On this occasion, we will talk about a beautiful lagoon, the Laguna de Morón, which is popularly among the most visited in Pisco, in Ica.
Also known as the hidden Oasis of Morón, the Morón Lagoon is an aquatic paradise that is camouflaged among the desert dunes.
Do you want to know everything you need to visit and enjoy this tourist attraction to the fullest? Well, follow our informative guide.
This place is quite curious, since although it is located in the middle of the desert, it has been used to maintain itself thanks to mineral seepage. These are such that you can even allow yourself to be surrounded by a bit of vegetation.
Once you have arrived at the place, you can take a dip in the lagoon and cool off. It is also possible to do sandboarding, a type of sport that involves moving on a board through the dunes. A really fun activity and highly recommended! By hiring a tourist agency service, they can provide you with all the equipment to practice this sport.
Also have your camera ready to take photos of this wonderful place. And enjoy the experience! The guard who guards the place will be able to provide and offer more in-depth data and information about the place.
This paradisiacal place is located in the middle of the desert and surrounded by the dunes of Pisco. The tour to the lagoon can last between an hour or a little less depending on the type of transport you decide to use. There are people who make the journey through jeeps or quads, turning the journey into an experience in itself.
The tour will be accompanied by fields or pastures of corn, cotton and other items from the beginning. In case it is very hot, before reaching the Laguna de Morón we will find La Poza. In it you can take a refreshing bath.
After passing the pastures, there will be a deserted road where, to locate yourself and follow the route, you will only have to follow the signs on the gas pipeline from Cusco to Pisco. When you are close to Lago Morón, you will see signs and a guard that controls the registration of visitors.
Note: At the end of the route there will be no signaling of the route. For this reason, it is best to hire a tour or tourist agency so that you do not run the risk of getting lost at any time.
For example, in the middle of the route there is a small lagoon known as "la poza", where you can cool off in case the heat is very strong. Children from the town of Bernales usually go there to bathe or take a dip, since it is one of the few sources of natural fun they have. This small lagoon is surrounded by large pastures.
When the road surrounded by farms ends, the tour begins solely through the desert dunes. One of the ways to guide yourself on the trail is to follow the posts and signs that indicate the route of the gas pipeline. This comes from Cusco to provide gas to the port of Pisco. However, in the last kilometers of the route there are no signs, so we recommend that you hire the services of a tour guide.
A few minutes before arriving you will see signs that will welcome you to Laguna Morón. In addition, there will be a booth with a guard authorized by the Municipality of Pisco, who keeps track of the people who visit the place. He will be able to provide you with other information about the oasis and tips for the road.
Now that you have arrived at this paradise in the middle of the desert, enjoy the landscape and its waters. It is allowed to bathe and swim in them. It will help you cool off from the heat, since, despite the sunny weather, the water remains cold. We recommend you stomp the ground; the floor in the lagoon is full of algae and you could slip.
Despite the beauty of the landscapes, the dunes and the calm of the place, this oasis is little known by tourists. Therefore, it may represent the perfect trip for you if you are looking to relax, adventure and have a good time with your loved ones in a place where there are not many people.
Morón is located very close to the Pisco river. On the shore you will see many reed plants up to two meters high. This place is the main habitat of many species of animals, such as cardinals, turtles, ducks, coots, among others. In the dunes you will also see some curious insects and the occasional lizard. All these species are completely harmless, but do not get too close to them out of respect for their habitats.
The Morón Lagoon extends for 300 meters long and 150 wide. Its maximum depth (in the center) is 8 meters, while on the shores it is 1.5 meters maximum. The sand of the dunes mixes with the remains of coral reefs in the surroundings. This combination generates as a result a whitish landscape on the sides of the reeds.
Its bluish-green waters are fed by an underground current that comes from the upper parts of the Humay district. Other species of birds that you can observe are herons, hummingbirds, red thrush, red-headed vultures, among others. You can also see some species of fish, such as carp and tilapia.
If you make your visit during the afternoon, you can wait until the sun goes down to appreciate the beautiful twilight. You will be able to admire in all its fullness from the top of the dunes and, in addition, you will have the beautiful Paracas peninsula as a background.
The seasons in Morón are the same as in Lima. From December to March the heat is at its best. If you make your journey in these months, try to bring sunscreen. The rest of the months you will experience strong winds in the desert, especially in the early hours of the morning. It is best to bring a coat to protect yourself from these strong breezes.
The Municipality of Humay began a few years ago to organize activities for the residents of Bernales and visitors. The goal is always to boost tourism in the area and give the oasis visibility. Therefore, various activities were carried out. These include: danceable yunzas, recreational and sports competitions, gastronomic festivals, and several others.
According to the corresponding authorities, these activities are carried out on the last Sunday of March, every year. Therefore, at that time, tourist activity increases. Over time, access roads, signage on part of the trail and security for tourists have been improved thanks to coordination with the Peruvian National Police (PNP).
After this adventure you can take a walk in the city of Pisco. Do not forget to go through the Plaza de Armas. This brings together the main hotels and restaurants in the area. Here you will find some samples of the best of the region's gastronomy. You will also appreciate the architecture of the city. If you want something more natural, go to the sector called “Pisco Playa”. There you will find the boardwalk, viewpoints and very striking spas.
