6 unmissable tourist places to see in Pucallpa

The beautiful city of Pucallpa, whose name means “Colored Land” is located in the district of Callería, in the province of Coronel Portillo, within the department of Ucayali and is the district, provincial and regional capital.

This beautiful city of Pucallpa is characterized by having a tropical climate throughout the year, a typical attribute of its privileged location in the Amazon jungle of Peru.

One of the main tourist attractions of the beautiful city of Pucallpa is its Natural Park. That is a protection area in which a large amount of wild flora and fauna of the Amazon is home. The site has a unique design that has a museum, as well as different rest areas for families who visit it. In its 28 hectares, the Pucallpa Natural Park is home to a total average of 400 species of plants and animals from the mysterious Peruvian jungle.

In addition to the above, in the urban area, Pucallpa has places such as its Plaza de Armas, a reference point of the City, which is surrounded by lush vegetation. In the same urban center there is also the Plaza del Reloj Público, near the Malecón de Pucallpa and which is a 25-meter tower at the top of which is a large clock.

In the surroundings of the city, there are other specific natural attractions (in addition to its beautiful trails and geographical features), such as the Yarinacocha Lagoon, just 15 minutes from the city. Yarinacocha Lagoon is ideal for fishing an important variety of native fish; Likewise, there it is possible to find the famous red dolphin, also called the pink dolphin, around which different myths arise.

Around Pucallpa, different native communities are also recognized, such as the Native Community of Santa Clara, whose residents, conservatives of their ancient traditions, still dedicate themselves to fishing, agriculture and livestock, to support their homes. Another Native community is that of San Francisco, where residents of the Shipibo-Conibo ethnic group live and who still today, like their inherited work activities, preserve the performance of different rituals, clothing, as well as the manufacture of crafts. Ultimate products that can be purchased by visitors through barter or purchase.

One more reason to visit the beautiful city of Pucallpa lies above all in the interest in mystical tourism; Not in vain, Pucallpa is famous for its shamans or witches to whom natives, residents and even tourists go in search of help or in order to learn about their ancestral practices.

In the aforementioned communities, in fact it is possible to attend the so-called Shamanic Nights (which have also been held in the Pucallpa Natural Park), and in which the famous Ayahuasca ritual is practiced, through which the interested attendees to a special trance, through which the witch or shaman is able to identify the evils that afflict him (if this is the case of the consultation) or ensure that the patient, on a different cosmic plane, acquires the knowledge that He is searching and what has led him to find the ritual. It is worth saying that not everyone can perform an ayahuasca ritual and that to do so, both “doctor” and “patient” have to go through a period of austerity (and cleansing), in different senses.

Boiling Mayantuyacu River

One of the most mysterious attractions of Peruvian nature is located very close to Pucallpa. This is the Shanay Timpishka, also known as Mayantuyacu because of the place where it is located and one of the most surprising tourist places in Pucallpa. This boiling river, whose waters exceed 90 degrees Celsius, draws attention due to the uncertain origin of its temperature and the healing power of its waters.

How to get to Mayantuyacu: to get to know the boiling Mayantuyacu River, the first step is to take a bus at the Pucallpa terminal heading to Honoria. Once in Honoria, you must go to the port and take a boat to get to Mayantuyacu. Finally, you will have to walk for about an hour until you reach the entrance, where you will have to pay 20 soles (6 dollars) to enter.

Although you can get here on your own, at Denomades we offer a tour to the boiling Mayantuyacu River, with all the amenities included: we pick you up at the door of your hotel in Pucallpa and take you to this tourist attraction by bus and boat hand in hand. from one of our specialized guides in the area.

Royalty Falls

What better option to enjoy the charms and heat of the jungle than to take a good dip in the waters of one of its waterfalls? Las de Regalías is one of the most beautiful that you can find in this region. In addition to various water jumps, here you can jump from the top of the waterfall into the pools below and release all the adrenaline you had in store. You dare?

How to get to Regalías Falls: The trip to Regalías Falls is somewhat complicated as it involves taking a car to Bello Horizonte, then renting a boat for a trip of an hour and a half and, finally, a 20-minute walk. All this is easier with our Regalías Falls tour, with all these routes included.

Cordillera Azul National Park

Among the wide variety of tourist places in Pucallpa where you can enjoy nature, we want to give a special mention to the Cordillera Azul National Park. This place was created to preserve the country's high jungle and its different habitats. It is a paradise where you can discover a great variety of Peruvian flora and fauna, among which 516 species of birds stand out.

How to get to the Cordillera Azul National Park: The Cordillera Azul National Park is located in a remote place far from Pucallpa, so it is essential to visit it with a specialized agency. At Denomades we offer the Cordillera Azul and Aguaytia tour, with which we do a full day through the most important part of this national park.

Yarinacocha Lagoon

One of the tourist places in Pucallpa with the greatest influx of visitors is the Yarinacocha lagoon, a beautiful natural destination in the region. Here, in addition to this wonderful lagoon, you can taste typical dishes such as juanes or take a boat ride for an hour for a modest price (30 soles, approximately 9 dollars, per boat for between 8 and 10 people).

How to get to Yarinacocha Lagoon: If you want to visit Yarinacocha Lagoon on your own, take a mototaxi in Pucallpa to Yarinacocha Plaza. From here you can take a short walk to the lagoon or take another motorbike. A more comfortable way to get there is with our Laguna Yarinacocha tour, a day trip in which, in addition to visiting this place, we will meet one of the Shipibo communities in the area.

Cashibococha Lagoon

Just a few kilometers from the Yarinacocha lagoon is another less crowded and well-known lagoon, the Cashibocoha lagoon. This place has very few tourists and most of the people who visit it are natives of the area. Here you can see how local people enjoy nature by fishing and playing sports. It is a perfect place to have a picnic while enjoying a beautiful sunset.

How to get to the Cashibococha lagoon: from Yarinococha you will only have to take a bus (two blocks from the main square) that will leave you directly at the Cashibococha lagoon.

A tour of the city of Pucallpa

Although the main tourist places in Pucallpa are outside the city, we recommend that you reserve a few hours of your trip to walk the streets of what is known as “Tierra colorada”, where you will find interesting and curious attractions.

One of the things that attracts attention in Pucallpa are the decorations with Shipibo motifs. In the Municipality, for example, the external columns are decorated with drawings of this culture. The cathedral, for its part, mixes the typical art brought by the Spanish conquerors with that of the Shipibos, with a very captivating result.

In addition, we recommend visiting the Pucallpa Regional Museum, a place full of fossil remains of different animals in the area, among which the jaw of a large lizard that lived here more than 10 million years ago stands out. If you travel with children, this place will leave them speechless.

How to get to Pucallpa?

The city of Pucallpa is located in the department of Ucayali, in eastern Peru, on the banks of the Ucayali River and in the middle of the Amazon jungle. It has a very good connection since it has an airport that can be reached from three important cities in the country: Lima, Tarapoto and Iquitos.

In addition, you can make the trip to Pucallpa by road from the same cities that we mentioned above. For the most adventurous, this destination has river access from Iquitos, a route that lasts between four and five days, depending on the water level of the river.
