Visit the Northern of Peru

Home / Travel Blog / Visit the Northern of Peru

Chachapoyas is a beautiful city that is located in the department of Amazonas. Its climate is usually temperate and with moderate rain, so you should always be prepared so that it does not ruin your fun.

Chachapoyas is a very privileged place, and in its areas is Kuélap, archaeological site that you must include in your route. However, to start with, you should take a walk around its Plaza de Armas, which you should visit and be able to enjoy its pool that is made of bronze of colonial origin.

You can also take a tour of Pozo de Yanayacu, where Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo is said to have sprung water from a rock and made people turn into jerky when drinking from it.

You should also visit La Casona Monsante, which has been declared a "Historical Monument", since it maintains the characteristics of a traditional house in the area. Another beautiful place to visit is the Yumbilla Waterfall.

How to get to Chachapoyas Peru

Direct flights to Chachapoyas airport are not usual. Therefore, they must be confirmed at the Jorge Chávez International Airport. The planes that provide the service are from the Air Force of Peru with support flights.

Airway and then land

Another option for the trip to Chachapoyas is to reach the nearby airports and then continue the journey by bus. If you decide on this option from the Tarapoto and Chiclayo airport, the trip takes around 8 to 10 hours. There is also the option of arriving at the Cajamarca airport from where the journey takes approximately 12 hours. The lines that offer the service from Jorge Chávez Airport are LAN, LC Peru, Peruvian Airlines, StarPeru and Avianca.

How to get to Kuelap from Chachapoyas

As some know, to reach Kuélap it was necessary to walk from Nuevo Tingo for 3 hours and a half or travel by car for 90 minutes. From now on, travelers have 26 gondolas for eight passengers each that save time and effort to dedicate to tour the citadel.

On the way to the cable cars.

From Chachapoyas to Nuevo Tingo there is an hour away by road. The buses depart from the Chachapoyas terminal and charge about S / 7 per passenger. The cable car ticket costs S / 20, round trip. From there, buses will take you to the departure lounge in about 10 minutes (this is included in the price). The journey takes 20 minutes to the exit platform.

Walk to the citadel.

From the platform of exit it touches to walk by between 25 to 30 minutes until Kuélap. The first section is a bit difficult because of the height that reaches 3,000 meters. It is recommended to arrive a day before the excursion to acclimatize.

Enter Kuélap.

The cost of admission for nationals and foreigners is S / 20 and with student ID S / 10. The tour of the 7 hectares takes around two hours. I suggest you start by visiting the interpretation center.

Tours are also offered from Jaén or Chiclayo for about S / 500 per person. This usually includes transportation to Chachapoyas, lodging for two nights, guided excursion and income.
