Paddington in Peru: The Beautiful Adventure in Machu Picchu

Since Thursday, January 23rd 2025, the town of Machu Picchu, also known as Aguas Calientes, has welcomed a new and charming resident. In the Alameda Los Artesanos, a small statue of the beloved Paddington Bear has begun to capture the hearts of both locals and tourists, from Peru and abroad. This gesture, which has already become a sensation in the town, represents a moment of joy and cultural connection between Peru and the United Kingdom.

The statue was unveiled during a formal ceremony presided over by the local authorities and the British Ambassador Gavin Cook. The event was attended by city councilors Hector Olivera Huamán, Sonia Hancco Mamani, and Alfredo Tapia Santisteban. Together, they celebrated not only the affection for this lovable character but also the strong ties between the two nations.

True to his style, Paddington is depicted sitting on a wooden bench, wearing his signature red hat, red coat, and holding a sandwich. The statue is located near the banks of the Aguas Calientes River, whose calm flow reflects the sense of tranquility the bear brings to those who see him. This setting is a perfect nod to Paddington's story, as in both the literary and cinematic versions, the character travels from Peru to England. Now, in a delightful twist, Paddington finds himself at the gateway to the world-famous wonder of Machu Picchu.

Ambassador Gavin Cook emphasized that the donation of the statue is a symbolic act of strengthening the cultural ties between the two countries, coinciding with the celebration of the release of Paddington in Peru. The Ambassador noted that Paddington embodies values that unite both nations - curiosity, kindness and friendship. "It is a privilege to be in such a sacred place as Machu Picchu, and with this statue we want to share a piece of our culture with everyone who visits this special place," Cook said during the ceremony.

More than just a commemorative figure, the statue has quickly become a new attraction for tourists arriving at this popular destination. Many visitors are already capturing the moment with photos of the charismatic bear, who warmly welcomes everyone who crosses his path.

This initiative strengthens the historical bond between the United Kingdom and Peru, while Paddington, now a resident of Machu Picchu Pueblo, promises to keep bringing smiles and joy to all who encounter him in his new home—a magical and legendary corner at the doorstep of the Inca citadel.
