The fortress is known as the best surviving example of Inca´s urban planning and engineering! It is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the fortress as well as for being one of the few places where Spaniards lost a major battle during their conquest.

In the evening, we take a train from Cusco to Machu Picchu tour. We spend the night in this small town before heading Machu Picchu.

Day 03: Machu Picchu - Cusco
Inca Trail Machu

In the morning, we get ready for the tour Cusco to Machu Picchu!! First off, we get on a shuttle bus that let us just in front of the entrance to this historic and spiritual centre of the Incas. There, we enter and start our guided tour, during which our tour guide introduces us to its history, absolute location of Machu Picchu and describes us each part of the "Lost City of the Incas".

Machu Picchu is both, the best and the least known site of the Incas as it is not mentioned in any Spanish conquistador´s chronicle so that contemporary archaeologists can not do anything more than just speculate on its functions. Local Quechua farmers had known about Machu Picchu Cusco for centuries before an 11-year-old boy showed the American historian Hiram Bingham (who was in search of Vilcabamba) this site on the 24th of July 1911. At that time, all the rest of the world became aware of its existence. However, the site was covered with thick vegetation so Hiram Bingham along with his team returned and within the years of 1912 and 1915 cleared its surface. Over the years, plenty of work has been done on excavating and studying the site. Despite these efforts, many unanswered questions have remain.

Afterwards, we are given an opportunity to hike the peak of Huayna Picchu to observe the Incan citadel from another perspective.

In the afternoon, we return by train to Ollantaytambo, from where we are taken by van back to Cusco.

Is it possible to do the Cusco and Machu Picchu tour on my own?
The archaeological places that make up the City Tour around Cusco are the following: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Tambo Machay, and Puka Pukara. These ruins are very close, a tour usually charge between 20 to 25 soles per person for tourism companies, but there are ways to get there without spending so much money. For example, Sacsayhuaman is located very close, for a backpacker who wants to walk the 7km on foot and not spend a lot of money is recommended to leave from the main square. After the visit to Sacsayhuaman, you can visit the ruins of Qenqo which is located 1.5 km away, it is very close, you can go following the road. After, about 5km following the road is the next archaeological site that is Tambo Machay, where the Inca bathed. About the entrance costs to the ruins, it is mandatory to have that tourist ticket that gives you access to 16 archeological sites (Machu Picchu is not included), also depends on how many days in cusco you will stay.

To make tours of Machu Picchu from Cusco by your own is very easy. The first thing you will have to do "and the most important thing" is to book your Machu Picchu Tickets, and the train tickets. Once in Cusco, you will have to get up very early and go to Pavitos Street, here you will find minibuses and minivans that will take you to the town of Ollantaytambo for around $4. When you arrive in Ollantaytambo, you can take a "moto-taxi", it's very fun and the easiest way to get to the Ollantaytambo station, this will cost between $ 0.70 and US $ 1.50. Once at the Ollantaytambo station, look for your train and approach it. The tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas is one of the most beautiful short train routes in the world, so enjoy it. The train will take you to the city of Aguas Calientes, at the foot of the Machu Picchu Mountain. Arriving at Aguas Calientes, you can buy the bus tickets next to the train station. These tickets can not be reserved in advance, bought online, or by third parties, ou can only buy your ticket in person and with your passport. Before letting you enter Machu Picchu Cusco you will be asked to present a copy of your Machu Picchu ticket along with your original valid Passport, if you do not present these documents you will be prevented from entering Machu Picchu, and everything will have been in vain; so do not forget that your documents must be valid at the moment of entering Machu Picchu.
